‘It was dystopia,’ recalls artist and illustrator Matthew Rice of first seeing Ham Court, the Oxfordshire house he and his then wife, Emma Bridgewater, bought in 2012. What began as ‘a bit of a Cinderella project’ started with nearly a year of clearing away the detritus, before evolving into a gradual labour of love. Rather than a wholesale makeover, the restoration unfolded with an unhurried spirit that extended naturally into the decoration, guided as much by circumstance as by intuition. Nowh
